Hi guys!

I love Rohloff, don't we all - to mech to wreck?

Over £600 is quite a commitment; what if it doesn't live up to the hype and good reviews?

Iv been noticing alternatives for a while now, noticeably the Shimano Alfine on the Genesis bikes and the Sram one. Has anybody used these and the Rohloff and know how they compare for almost or more than half the price?

Replies welcome :)
Keith.

well the Rohloff has 14 gears and the others will leave you short of gears.

what do you want it for?

Its going to be going onto an On-One Inbred for cross country.

Also something that i failed to mention, are the hubs compatible with slot dropout or horizontal dropouts? Or is there an adaptor?

the Alfines only 7 spd I think, is it a more dirt proofed version of the nexus? from what I gather its not very smooth

they will work with either but you may need a chain tensioner if you do not have horizontal drop-outs.

Iwould go for the rohloff as you will get the full range of a 27 gear bike.

    Thanks for your response man!
  • Some friends of friends have warned on the extra weight of their hubs though. This isn't so much a weight weeny comment, but more that it affects the balance of the bike as it places too much weight on the back of the bike. Maybe best to try a bike with one?

I really wanted one for my P7, but I was advise to only go on it if I really want to tour. For normal xc, a well maintained derailleur system is best. For out and out touring however, nothing comes close the the stupidly high build quality of maintenance free attributes of the Rohloff.
