Any reason in particular for think he's an Idiot.

Reducing time traffic lights are on red - good IMHO (for us non RLJers).
Removing bendy busses from London streets - very good IMHO.

Allowing scooters / motorbikes to use bus lanes - pretty neutral as in my experience most seem to use them anyway.

More secure bicycle parking (like at Finsbury) and a bike hire scheme (like Paris) see a good idea.

I'd like him to work hard to get bikes on trains (and buses) again!

    I agree, he's an idiot.

Next he'll be offering drivers who come into the congestion zone free lollypops, and for the high polluters a corneto!!!

There's already a bike hire scheme in London and the only thing I've ever seen them used for is putting litter in the shopping baskets!!

Removing bendy buses is not going to happen in four years. They will be here for a lot longer than that.

He's just playing into Ken's hands by coming up with these "great" ideas that'll benefit Londoners!!

If motor bikes are allowed into the bus lanes, this is the one and only time that I think there should be more speed cameras  Used to cover the bus lanes, and this would be to stop (motor bike) couriers using bus lanes as uninterrupted traffic free race tracks with no speed limit...As they seem to treat any bit of empty road at the moment.

Yep, I know there are good motor bike couriers out there...I just haven't seen many

He's an idiot because he's essentially pro car. Fair enough if we want London to regress back to the 20th century

In the interests of balance and fairness, you might be justified in saying that all the main parties' candidates are idiots.

Ken's been great for some Londoners and a living nightmare for others.

The motorbikes in bus lanes thing isn't all that controversial really. They've been allowed in the A13 bus lanes for years with no ill effects.

He's still better than Ken "Bendy Bus" Livingston. He's done naff all for cyclists as far as I can tell, at least Boris actually cycles in London. I'd love to know what mini cabs have to do to get one of Ken's new licences - clearly a driving test is not involved.

Motorbikes should not be allowed in bus lanes. Neither should buses. London's existing bus lanes would make nice sized cycle lanes. If anyone parks in these lanes, their vehicle could be vapourised by weapons grade lasers mounted on turrets at strategic road crossings.

The one candidate you can almost certainly say is not and Idiot is Boris.

He may appear an absolute nutter though!

I don't get this problem with bendy buses, I've never had a problem with one, they're pretty much always well driven (and often very well driven) and I just stay away from them, like I do all large vehicles.

    PRJ,

you have a good point - the drivers of bendy buses are generally pretty good but despite this I have had some problems

    1. I'm in the inside lane of three on Park Lane. Bendy bus in middle lane is overtaking me and then looking to pull in at a bus stop. They need a huge amount of space to make that manouvre and it can be bloody terrifying if they underestimate your speed and the back half gradually slides across your front wheel

    2. a bendy bus is at a bus stop, you pullout to overtake, you are alongside the rear half when the indicator goes on and the bus starts pulling out. Aggghhhh!!!!

    3. bendy buses are not well suited to making sharp turns at T-junctions. They basically need the whole road to get round which causes a n obstruction to every other road user

If the drivers were not so good it would be bloody carnage. Whoever thought they were suited to London's organic/unplanned and (by international standards) narrow streets is a bloody pillock and needs a good slap (particularly when we have these very efficient things called double deckers).

    cheers

"But his traffic lights proposal was immediately condemned by Living Streets, formerly the Pedestrians Association, which said the “green man” phase should be lengthened, not shortened, to give elderly people and parents with pushchairs more time to cross safely. "

Once pedestrians have started to cross, the traffic must remain stationary until they have reached the pavement, regardless of what the lights are doing. If someone disabled or elderly is taking longer than the green man phase the traffic has to wait. The problem comes from drivers not knowing and not obeying a law that is not enforced, rather than the actual timing of the lights.
This post contains traces of nuts.

The problem with traffic light phasing is that if you change one set of lights you have to change all the others. If you don't, then everything gets fucked up and you get traffic queued across junctions, huge empty roads in one place and gridlock elsewhere.
I have a friend who makes a fortune modelling traffic flow.

I can't see why pedestrian crossings need to have such a long pause cycle before the light turns red though. That I would like to see changed.

An extra phase of all traffic stopped at four way junctions where cyclists can pass through on the pedestrian phase would be nice. I we could be trusted to stop, check, slow down and ride responsibly!

Double deckers, you mean those buses with loads of people of the bottom floor and hardly anyone on top?

Be careful what you wish for, would you prefer one bendy on the road or three double deckers?

Oh, and I should add I for one don't miss people leaping off the back of routemasters without looking...
