Hi world,
:?:
can anyone tell me if avid disc brakes can be mixed and matched. I have avid 3's and would like avid 7 levers to gain the benits of adjustment. can this be done, if not what are the issues........i have contacted a number of shops and they either
1. dont know
2. buy them and try, if they dont work, tough luck
3. dont sell them (what happen's if you break one?)
4. say no way all components have to match perfectly ( which i know from 10 year biking is rubbish, my bike is like a who's who of parts)

so can any one help, cause these breaks are costy..

Should be ok as the calipers seem to be the same.

i have sent a few mails out, if i get any more info i'll post it
    cheers

OK a question. why do you want the pad adjust? I have never really used it. Ok occasionally when tyred it has been nice to reduce the hand movement. But it is very rare and after the reach has been set most brakes are never adjusted again.

Sweden, nice, was in malmo a few weeks ago,
besides that, the issue i have is that the travel before a contact point on my my old v brakes was very small and i like it like this, the brake point was very sharp. on my 3's its about and inch before it bites and as the only adjustment is on the lever reach the bite point remains the same, just the reach changes. this reach adjustment also brings the pulled lever too close to the bar (or against it) which 1. traps my finger and 2. finishes the brake pull before maximum braking.
    phew...hope that makes sence.

You will find that as you use the brakes that the dead travel does reduce. a tip. remove wheel and apply brake to move the pads in, then make sure the disc can be refitted. travel adjust not needed.

    thanks,
i'll try that, is there an issue if i let the pads in to far?? like on a motor bike set up.
should i put something in between the pads to stop them going in all they way??
the clearance is so small but could be closer i guess.
    cheers

    down load a manual.

you can always press them back in. but as long as the pads are there you will not push the pistons out (but if one piston does not move the other may come out). Care must be taken. So if you feel happier with a card between then do so.

My new juicy 5s which are very similar to 3s were like that, lots of lever travel. I took the caliper off, squeezed the lever until the pads were touching, then pushed them back until the disc just fitted between the pads. Now they have perfect bite point.

    Man what a top tip.
I've been wondering about bleeding or getting Juicy 7 levers for my Juicy 5s but having done that it has transformed the feel (and saved me over £20 for a ridiculously priced bleed kit).
