Campag cassettes and mechs compatibility
a mate has a standard double setup with a short cage mech but wants to go bigger on the rear sprockets than her current cassette, ideally up to 27-29ish. I notice that 13-29 is available in Centaur/Chorus etc.
What max sprocket can a short cage mech handle?
It's a record mech, not sure of year. 10 speed. I only know Shimano... :?

Hi, short cage is fine for anything up to and including 26 at the back (as advised by Campag). If you go 29, you may need a medium cage. Having said that, a friend ran a 29 on the back with a short cage for the Marmotte. It might work if you avoid the extremes (big front and big back rings).

Search their tech pages at the back of their catalogue for capacities.....over the last few years they have had a disclaimer page that capacities are guides and can depend on several factors.I'd rather walk than use Shimano0

Simon Burney (GB off-road squad manager and former team mechanic) states in his book on cyclo-cross that a short-cage derailleur should be able to handle a maximum of a 28-tooth cog without any bother. As long as you're not trying to select big-to-big combos (e.g. 53t on front, 28t on back), you should be fine with a 27 or a 28.

Yes, but anything that cannot handle big-big is dangerous. Usually the whole lot (mech and chain) feeds into the rear wheel. This leaves you walking at best.
I know, you say you'll remember. It's the time when you are knackered and you need to grab a gear while a car is cutting you up that it happens.
I run a Campag 12-23 with a 30/39/48 triple OK with a short cage mech. Just."It must be true, I saw it on the Internet!"0 -
I use a short cage with 53/39 double and 13-30 cassette. As long as you get the chain length right all combinations are useable. I don't use big+big, but it won't break anything.
