Need some help with a key bike component

Well this might really seam a stupid question to you guys but here goes, I still don't fully understand how bike gears work :oops: (no pun intended) if someone could give me a good explanation to how they work it would be mcuh appriciated thanks a bunch, Iwan

Basically as the chain moves round, the derraileurs move as you shift and so line up the chain with the next cog, as it turns it moved over. Try chenging them when the bike is in a stand or upside down and it should become pretty obvious.0
