this is a bit of a daft question but I am just wondering.. do any of you road riders wear loose fitted shorts, the only reason i ask is because when i go out on my road bike, enter sportives etc i will wear baggy cycling shorts rather than lycra... mainly because i have varacus vains in my thighs and i wat to keep them coverd up.. does anybody who enters sprtives wear loose fitted shorts or will i be the only one? dont want to be getting any funny looks you see lol.

Is wearing 3/4 tights an option?

I'm sure that'd you'd appreciate the comfort padded lycra shorts would give you over baggy shorts. I doubt you'd get any funny looks wearing baggies, but I think you should consider comfort over appearance.

Sportives are not easy, and wearing baggies would make them a bit harder.

Wear the baggy shorts over the top of some padded lycra shorts, then you get the best of both worlds.

I have an excellent pair of Pearl Izumi baggies with 'mesh' lined inner shorts - top shorts with comfort of the usual padded lycra but with the benefits of pockets galore! Not cheap but worth the expense, and double up as cargo shorts during the summer too

Endura do a nice line in baggies with inners. I think they're called Humvees? Either way, I have a pair and they're magic: detachable inner (padded) liner that is extremely comfy and the shorts work both on and off the bike. The only problem is the black colour just reinforces how hideously white my legs are at the moment!

Why not just get long lycra shorts? Won't they cover just as much as the baggies do? If not then some 3/4s as reddragon suggests. Can't believe baggies are anything as like as comfy as lycra after many hours in the saddle (even if worn over proper shorts - still more bits to snag and rub).

There's some decent fitted 3/4 shorts about, not lycra but not baggy. Rapha's Fixed shorts spring to mind, but there are similar cheaper ones to be had.

I am planning to get some Endura 3/4 Humvee's once it gets a bit warmer.

Sorry but the sight of me in Lycra shorts would be too embarrassing.

I currently wear training bottoms at present

How about a pair or "Ron Hills" ? Know of these from my marathon running days. Full length, lightweight, they call them "tracksters",
Not baggy, not lycra, inbetween and slim enough not to get caught up with your chain...
Sure you can get these or similar most places.

I've got a couple of pairs of Endura Humvee shorts but I only ever use them on the MTB now. With the liner in or underneath a pair of padded under shorts they're pretty good but there are so many pockets and bits hanging off them (key chains etc.) that at speed on a road bike they were annoying as much as drag inducing.
