the old factory vs handbuilt will come up every time. Make your own mind up but for me, at that price point, I'd go handbuilt every time.
source some decent reliable hubs (ultegra, DA, Hope etc.) maybe s/hand, and lace them to OP rims and DT spokes, prolock nipples. Make a lovely, tight wheelset. Use a good builder.Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0 -
You say you don't want any "obscure/hard to find spokes/hubs". That effectively rules out factory built wheels.
If you contact a reputable wheel builder, like Paul Hewitt, and tell them what you want for how much, they probably give you the best advice about handbuilts.

If you wanted to go down the Factory route, I'd recommend something like the Campag Zondas for around £250.0
