Just got my new (well i say new, its used but only very lightly) Cannondale CAAD 5, and the brakes are on the opposite sides to normal.

Front brake on the left and rear on the right

The bike still has the origional bartape on it, so doubt it has been changed.

Is this an American thing and the case with all Cannondales?

I would change it but dont really want to remove bar tape etc.

This is an American / European thing I believe. I reckon it's less confusing for beginners as the right hand side controls the rear brake & rear derailleur, while the left hand side controls the front brake & FD. That's pretty intuitive.

In the UK + Australia, new bikes are sold with the front brake on the right, the same as motorbikes. But when I'm riding my motorbike -correction, when I rode my motorbike- I never forgot that I was on a motorbike.

I had them the American way round for many years but I swapped them over after fracturing my right wrist. Reason being, that it was too hard to feather the rear brake... then I broke my left wrist, and swapped them back. Now I have a mix of both on my fleet of bikes, but one of the first things I do straight after I get on a bike is check which way round the brakes are...
