Damn i just cannot work out what size of bike is right for me.

3 different bikes and 3 different sizes.

1 bike the Large 51cm seems to be right. Focus Corrente

2nd bike Large 58cm seems to be right .Ridgeback Flight T3

3rd bike the extra large seems to be right. Specialized Sirrus

I am 6' 1" tall with an inside leg of approx. 84cm. I'm used to riding a bike with the top bar just 1cm below my crotch when standing over it.

I tend to think the top tube length is the most important with regard to bike fit. You can alter the saddle height quite easily, but messing around with stem lengths is more fiddly.

I'm 6'2" and tend to ride 58cm (top tube centre-centre) with a 120mm stem for a race bike, and perhaps a 100mm stem for a training bike etc.

Different manufacturers have different ways of measuring frame size - compact frames (ie sloping top tube) usually have an "effective frame size" (ie what size it would be if the top tube was level) and hence why the tob tube length (or even "effective top tube length") is usually the best way to guage the correct frame size you need.

Even so, I can't understand how a 51cm frame can be a large - that must be one hell of a sloping top tube!
