THere is a tool to hold the nut on the back of the bolts, such as this Park Tools one. Similar is available from Shimano and Tacx, I can't see any particular benefit of any of them, all quite cheap.

You could possibly manage without using a screwdriver, I think it is more important for tightenening. An allen key is used for the bolts.

    many thanks
  • Hi there.

Some chainring bolts need the slotted tool as shown above, some just need an allen key.

It's also probable that there'll be a thread locking compound holding the bolts tight, so you might need to give them a bit of, er persuasion.

It's at this point that things usually go wrong, as you're straining hard to undo the bolt, it finally gives in, or the tool slips. Either way your hand usually slips suddenly and you jam your hand hard into your chainring... Well at least that what generally happens to me.

What happens next is that I swear continuously for five full minutes in several different European languages whilst dripping blood everywhere.

So, my advice is: Keep the chain on the big ring to hide the sharp spikey bits and wear gloves, preferably those thick winter ones.

    Good luck, Andy

ps Don't forget a wee drop of thread lock when you're re-assembling.
