Quite possibly, but consider bumping the budget a tad for this..

Still an SR fork, which are notoriously unreliable (some are great, some are gash),but you get Hydro brakes, and even the worst are better than V's.
Not sure about the 'spec may change' bit either tbh..=========================================
Dot 4 in the eye hurts. Trust me0 -

Each to their own and all that, but even when my hydros were slipping and squealing due to a DOT 4 contaminated set of pads and rotor,IMO they were still way more powerful than V's.
And the Tektros have had good reviews if memory serves?=========================================

i would say vees are far easier to maintain than single pot discs, and when i got dot4 on my hope m4 pads... well i wasnt gona stop for love nor money!!! plus replacement pads for vees are £1.99 from wilko but yeah, wach to there owni ride a hardtail0

Now that I can't argue with.
Thinking about it,maybe V's are better for people new to the sport?
Wasn't having a go Will,just expressing opinion.=========================================

The Tektro Auriga are twin pot. For 300 quid, thats a good bike, and the higher end SR forks are pretty decent - its the XCMs that can be a bit variable!
Vs can work very well for many people - get good pads and set them up right and they do the job.0 -

oh yeah, didnt take it wrong way or nuthin and sonic, didnt actualy look at the brakes, making assumptions. overall, seems a good buy.i ride a hardtail0 -
This is the curious situation I fond with Vs and XC bikes... many people will have a couple of beefy bikes, maybe a 6 inch full susser, and a 140mm forked hardcore hardtail, saying they aint bothered about weight, and discs are a must. Then they get a CX (CX, not XC!) which have generally crap brakes, and are for light weight, then take these off road too. So why not get a bike that was designed to do the job ie an XC bike with 80-100mm travel?!!!!0

Clarify CX SS?
Never heard the term/abreviation before?
Oh,and apologies to the original poster for taking the thread off track,we'll find you a good buy if you bear with us

Now we have to find the guy a good buy as compensation for hijacking his thread..
And you make a bloody good point there..=========================================

Also, 'it can't have flat narrow bars, small forks, low riding position, etc on an MTB', but perfectly acceptable on a CX bike!
Anyway, er, for 300 squids, its a good buy, but doesnt have disc wheels which would make upgrading a pain if he wanted to.0 -
So not bad then? for price tht is.
