Can you take them in your hold luggage (where presumably it isn't pressurised) or will they blow up?

    You're not supposed to...
  • Yes, i mean theoretically if they did blow it would be through the thin cover at the threaded end which gets pierced when they are used rather than blowing apart flinging shrapnel everywhere.

I think the chances of them doing anything at all harmful are almost completely negligible. I couldn't of course encourage anybody else to do something you're not supposed to, though I'm told by a "friend" that they don't tend to get picked up on luggage scanners either, so you can effectively fly with them if you want...

But would you want to risk it getting picked up by the scanner and then have someone rifling through your bike bag ?

Personally - i buy them at the other end if i need them.

Mine got spotted on the scanner on the 'oversize luggage' conveyor at Stansted a few years ago. They asked me to take them out of the bag and then binned them.
Since then i've always carried a mini pump.

Its quite cool seeing your bike on the scanner. I have no idea how they work out whats what - it looks very complicated to me - and i packed the bag !
