VITUS 979 - MAVIC stem sizing

Hi There

I have aquired a MAVIC stem for this frame but realised that its french sized having a 22mm quill rather than the normal 22.2mm - whilst a Cinelli IA stem fits into the steerer perfectly, the MAVIC stem has a slight gap and can be rocked side to side - my question is would this be eliminated once the stem is tightened up? I don't won't to try this if its not going to work since the stem is new old stock and I will resell it on Ebay if its wrong (expensive).

Also its for a 26mm bar whilst I only have a Cinelli 64 bar which I think is 26.4mm - the stem does fit this but again I suspect thats a bit of luck - is the mismatch between a 26.4mm bar and a 26mm stem somethign that can be ignored?

Many thanks

Simon

  • I used Mavic stems in my 979-I didn't think the quill was different, although on reflection may have been a bit loose.

Mavic bar diameter was ,I think, 26.0, so in theory old Cinelli bars won't fit.

you will scratch your bars getting them in !

    i have been there

u need to be very carefull ..need to make sure all rough edges off the 'hole' & open up the stem...

no prob with 22.0 vs 22.2 ...have you seen diff in 0.2mm ??

The MAVIC stem has a seperable head so you can actually get it on OK - in fact its barely noticeable - I was more concerned about the quill being slightly undersized - its noticeably narrower that the Cinelli 1A stem - and does rock slightly - just haven't dared to fully tighten it up yet - perhaps I should just try it!
  • you could always put a slither of aluminium foil around part of the stem to take up the slack. I think it will be OK once tightened correctly
Recipe: shave legs sparingly, rub in embrocation and drizzle with freshly squeezed baby oil.
