Looking to buy off road bike..for light trail riding

I hav a hybrid fr town work...but it doesnt seem suitable for some of the rutted paths i hav been trying..i'm not looking to go over the south downs (near by)..but want to expand my off road use ...i cant c it being punished too much (at this stage)..my budget really is 400 tops...wud welcome suggestions for a bike tht wud fit the above.

Ive just bought a GT Agressor for £280 if you want to save bit of cash from your budget.. maybe use the spare £120 to upgrade something on it?

Or take the missus out for dinner! (Ok spend it on the bike)
