Shearer & Chiles - Can we help the Super Cycle pair?
Comments

Phew, I bet they are thanking their lucky stars that this wind isn't going to stick around. Looks like its easing off somewhat tomorrow. Although it'll still be fairly miserable conditions by the look of it.0

I heard Chiles on the One Show say he went on a 100 mile ride at the weekend and did it in under 5 hours. If so then he should be ok but I have doubts about Shearer as his football training isn't geared for long term endurance and I could see him getting into trouble.Norfolk, who nicked all the hills?

And he did that marathon dressed as Baggy Bird the West Brom mascot!!!I'd rather walk than use Shimano0 -
getting up a bit earlier tommorow going to ride to st james park to see them off. luckly i work in newcastle.0
-
What are they riding? Looked like Specialized S-Works, but I could only see the top part out of focus on the TV clip.0

Shearers had a fall already. From the update site:
"Alan hits the deck as he stops at traffic lights".0 -

I think this is great and Chapeau to both of them.
Just got my £50
Come on guys, show some support, God knows we need some good news to get youngsters involved in our beloved sport.aztecboy0 -
been checking their progress, had 10m to go at midnight so maybe 3/4hr behind schedule.

I went out to take a look when they reached "The Hawthorns" (West Bromwich Albion's Stadium) and decided to shadow them to Birmingham. It's quite a convoy. A motorcyclist keeping with them, a van with flashing lights in front (most of the time), another behind with various support staff in, then a Specialized Service Van and another vehicle with a big illuminated flashing sign "Slow Down Cyclists Ahead" and arrows pointing vehicles right.
There are about eight of them actually doing the ride although how many are going all the way I'm not sure. Wolves Manager Mick McCarthy joined them at Burton but I couldn't see him at The Hawthorns but he probably wouldn't be let in.
As for accompanying them. No chance. Myself and another guy, who is planning to go all the way on this second day, were firmly told to stay a good distance behind the last vehicle and, if we were persistently too close thay'd ask the police to "have a look at us".
So I stayed way behind but of course all bikes, including me, were able to leave the convoy behind on the A41 through Handsworth. When the vehicles caught up I was hooted and told to drop back. I was a good twenty yards behind already.
Oh well. I'll keep my sponsor money for my own fundraising event (see below). It's raising money for the same or similar projects as Sports Relief only without the celeb culture.
Good luck to the lads on the "run in". To be honest they looked fresh and relaxed as they walked to their bikes and as I followed. My bike's an Orbea Elgeta from Epic Cycles0 -
Shame they take the don't come close attitude, you would never have seen Beefy Botham telling people not to walk with him on his epic charity walks.
I do wonder whether it is them or the organisers take this attitude surely the more public support the better, plus if I was flagging a fresh cyclist to encorage would not go a miss"BEER" Proof that god loves us and wants us to be happy0 -
Well it is a shame but I can see their point. I know it's very unilikely and everyone would only be trying to support them but if you did accidentally knocked one of them off and they couldn't continue it would make things a bit awkward wouldn't it.
Obvious I know, but still a shame.Cycling - The pastime of spending large sums of money you don't really have on something you don't really need.0 -

I presume it's so they don't end up encouraging loads of pikey chavs on their bmxs to tag along.I'd rather walk than use Shimano0
-
Its more a shame that in todays society that they feel they have to take those measures, I know what you are saying as I suppose there would be some nutter who Shearer has wronged by scoring a goal to knock their beloved team out of the cup."BEER" Proof that god loves us and wants us to be happy0

Well thank you very much Gary Lineker. I always thought he was a pratt and now I know. These guys wear out their arses cycling 335 miles and all he has to say is that, like most cyclists, they probably never stopped at a red light. What a berk! Lineker should be made to ride all the way back to Newcastle and that might teach him some respect.
Anyway, what a great achievement! Well done Chiles and Shearer. I hope that West Brom win the Cup and that Newcastle win a match some time this year.0 -
I'm listening to them on Five Live whilst making tea - they sound well and truly fooked.
Well done guys.
This is one night of charity telly that I'm quite hoping to watch a bit of - I want to see James Cracknell doing his monster challenge. I hope they show lots of that tonight.0 -

Yep, they looked well knackered, almost speechless, but I bet inside they are just glowing with the sense of achievement. It will be sinking in for days.
Chiles said that Shearer had gone to a "dark place" while riding. Not surprised. But re-surfacing from that depth of self-doubt is extremely exhilarating.0 -
are they showing any of James cracknell? they just did a bit of a run down of the night ahead and didn't mention it. Don't say I missed it.
Just saw the lady with cancer and nearly started blubbling. What a bloody shame.0 -

It then annoyed me when it went to Richard Hammond and he said that if two sweaty guys on bikes didn't rock your boat, now here's some real entertainment (or something like that) . Well Richard, three idiots fooling around with gaz guzzlers on Top Gear certainly doesn't rock my boat!!
Anyway as I promised myself I would make a donation if they did it, I have now done so.0 -
what??? Cracknell cycled 1400 plus miles in 7 days across France and Spain! That's 200 miles a day!
How much airtime does that get? I estimate about 6 seconds.
Clearly we are in the wrong game. I'm taking up ballroom dancing, like Mrs Pneumatic says that I should.0 -
I still think Walliams swimming the Channel was the most impressive Sport Relief challenge.I'd rather walk than use Shimano0
-
Hopefully they'll have some programmes on it in future but yeh, the amount of footage of Cracknell was pretty poor!0

After his impressive cross-London showing on a bike in the last series of Top Gear, Hammond ought to know better. Then again, maybe the tactless comments delivered by him and the jug-eared crisp salesman came courtesy of a scripted autocue written by someone with a Daily Mail-esque view of cyclists?

Bloody Linekar! I thought he was one of the better presenters then he has to go and come out with "Like all cyclists they didn't stop at any red lights". A big lack of professionalism there. My bike's an Orbea Elgeta from Epic Cycles0
-
Linekar! what a p*llok - he failed to give due credit to both Shearer and Chiles for riding 300+ miles in 2 days, with little sleep and (shoot the producer) reading out a jibe about red light jumping cyclists.
On a question of fact - can the BBC demonstrate via the convoy escort how many red lights the pair jumped? - I very much doubt it!Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom0 -

Let's not drag the achievement down with dwelling on the lights comment....I'm sure practically every throwaway comment made on a live show could be analysed by interested parties and offence be taken.I'd rather walk than use Shimano0

It would be forgivable if it was just something he said, but it was just about the only thing he said in the most trivial marking of an achievement I have seen in ages. The come dancing lot get three ten minute slots, the top gear boys get 20 minutes arsing around in someone's garden (actually it was quite funny) but none of these people put in the almost super human effort of S and C. They deserved better. Happily, they were probably too knackered to even notice.0
