  • By far the best software I have seen for storing and analysing routes is Ascent:

    http://www.montebellosoftware.com/

It is very user friendly and being constantly updated and improved by the developer (who is available for personal help via the forum). Well worth the 20USD fee.

Uploading routes (i.e. putting them onto the Garmin) is a less simple process, I've found that the best way is to use an internet based bit of routing software (www.bikeroutetoaster.com) to create the route file and then use the free (but awful) Garmin Training Centre for Mac to do the upload. This is availabel free form the Garmin website.

I think route planning and uploading may be a feature planned for Ascent 2, but AFAIK there is no schedule for this yet.

Motionbased is great for post ride analysis.
  • sporttracks is also good for data analysis, and is free.
  • Another vote for Ascent.

  • Thanks folks! I'll start off with Ascent and let you know how i get on!
  • Motionbased is great once your route is uploaded but Mac support is a bit patchy.

I have three Macs and the upload software only works on one of them.

Also you don't get full functionality on a Mac. I've had my 305 for one year and Garmin haven't raised their game for Macs despite their press releases.

MB is about £50 a year to store all your data. Worth it if you do a few rides/week.

  • Have been using ascent for downloading routes from the 205 as it is very easy to use and the routes look good on their maps and google earth too! I had problems getting MotionBased to work so tried MapMyRide for uploading my/others routes which works very easily too! Thanks for your help!
