Hi,

Am new to all this tubular stuff so please bear with me.

I bought a Planet-X front wheel, some tape and a Tufo tub. Then I watched this video to see how to combine the three. The video looks pretty straightforward. However...

The tape in the video is foil-backed (I think) so when the guy pulls the backing from within the rim/tub sandwich, it comes out easily in one sweet motion - whereas the tape which seems to be available in the UK is paper-backed and this means that when I have the tub mounted onto the wheel and try to remove the backing, it just rips off in small pieces. Can't remove it all.

I've tried applying the tape to the wheel, removing all the backing and then putting on the tub. The tub gets caught by the tape before it I have the chance to centre it on the wheel.

Where am I going wrong? I don't want to use glue so that's not the answer, nor do I want to have to go to my LBS to pay them to do it...

All posts most welcome thanks!

Andy

A friend told me a neat trick for which I was very grateful:

    - Apply the tape to the rim all the way round.
    - Put the tub on, on top of the tape, with its backing still on.
    - Insert a pen or pencil inbetween the tub and the rim at the place where you want to start peeling. Peel away the first cm or so (bit tricky to get started).
    - Then roll the pen round the rim to lift the next bit of tub up and peel away the tape backing from that bit.............. and so on.

You've still got to take care not to rip the tape but it's a darn sight easier than not using a pen.

Not sure if I can describe this clearly but....I used to to use something thin but strongish e.g. a wooden kebab skewer between the tub and the rim ahead of the tape, sort of lifting the tub while removing the backing paper. This (after the first couple of attempts!) allowed me to get all the way round with the paper in one piece.

Well, it worked for me (I expect I read it as a "tip" somewhere!).

Clearly Ruth thinks and types quicker than I do!!

Just watched the video in your post and there is no way the tape comes off that easy. Not in my experience anyway. I generally use jantex tub tape. Everything in the video seems ok except once you've centred the tub on the tape (still with the paper back on) put about 10-15 psi in the tyre. Check for centering again. Then starting at the 2" strip you left out (as per the video) gently ease the tub upwards off the rim and peel the paper off.
Work you way around the tub, lifting the tub and peeling about 3" or 4" at a time. Check tub is centred afterwards then pump tub up.

Sorry if this is obvious, but fit tub dry, inflate hard and leave 24 hours before sticking. Stretches it nicely!
