£300 bike GT Avalanche 3.0 or Scott Aspect 55

I'm a newbie and have done some looking around to narrow my options, but could do with a bit of advice please.
Firstly, if I can't afford hydraulic disc brakes, is it worth getting mechanical disk brakes or should I just start with Vs? (eg. a Scott Aspect 50)
Secondly, if you were choosing between a GT Avalanche 3.0 and a Scott Aspect 55 which would you go for?
Oh, I want a bike that I can use in town, with the front suspension locked out, and off-road maybe once a month for some not-very-hardcore stuff.
I've been told to avoid the Mongoose Tyax Elite and the Specialised Hardrock Comp - cos they're too heavy - if you strongly disagree with that advice, do let me know.
cheers,
alan

Test them all out - not much in them apart from minor spec changes. Tyax Elite does have a damped fork though, which makes a difference when the going gets rough.0
