is it possible to use an e type bottom bracket without an e type front mech?? having difficulty in finding one in the size for my frame (68/113) that isnt an e type!
failing that are the 73/113's going to fit okay using my old cup?? plenty of them available! same story for the lx bb's too! but really want to keep it xt with the rest of the drivetrain!
any help gratefully received!

68/113 is common. what cranks do you have and what fitting?
if you use a 68-113 e type you will need a spacer to take up the space the mech would use."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

ive got an xt m750 i think crank?? bought the whole lot (shifters, cassette, crank, bb & front and rear mech's) all at once through a silly deal the lbs had! its the octalink splined version.
i know its a common size but am struggling to find a non e type through my normal places (crc, merlin, woolly hat shop, etc.) at a decent price (£25 ish!)
i've got a rubber O ring is best to describe it that fills the gap left in the current bb (fitted fine in the old framt and both frames are the same size bb wise, although the person who fitted the bb to the frame prior to me buying it has mullered up the threads on both cups on the truvativ bb!)Timmo.

so what is the crank fitting to the bb?
and what is the truvative bb and rubber ring got to do with XT cranks?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

ok if it is the HT1 octalink

yes it is the ht1 set but the link is to either ultegra (which iirc like the xtr only fit the same cranks) or lx or lower spec, i am after an XT spec bb!
the rubber ring from the truvativ bb i have on my xt one whihc is in the frame as the left hand cup would not go in any more with out too much force for comfort! hence the fitting of the ring ro fill the gap!
which got me thinking about using my existing loose cup for the bb (metal cups on the xt bb's) and swapping it with the one from a 73/113 bb as they are plentiful!Timmo.

the ebay ones are all 73/118
(just noticed the amazon one, bit pricey compared to other bike shops if they have them!!)
will i be able to do as mentioned and use a 73/113 bb and use my existing cup?? if so i'll get one from woollyhatshop! (£24 delivered)Timmo.

so what about the 51's and the 30's? they will work."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
Parktools :?:SheldonBrown0 -
yes they would but that wasnt the point of the original post!! i was after the info on the XT es 71 bb's not the deore es30's or the lx es51's! other wise i would have asked specifically about them!Timmo.

okay so thank youy for that, i had got that from the first time you replied! hence me saying that i have a rubber ring that would fill the gap!! (and there onwards it got a little odd!)
but as of yet i am still no clearer as to wether the only difference in the 68 and 73/113 is the cup size on the loose cup as such for the bb????Timmo.

I think you can use a 73/113 on a 68 frame, but dont quote me on that! You need to use a 2.5mm driveside BB spacer with it, then a normal LH cup.0 -
great, thanks for that! i shall sort one out after dropping the littlun off to nursery!Timmo.
