Cut a long story short i putting a old frame together for my dad as he needs something lighter to ride. Wheels are sorted, i'll get a pair from merlin, now the drivetrain he doesn't want to spend alot and i mean cheaper the better so i have decided to go 8sp and this is what i have come up with..
SRAM SX4 Trigger Shifter 8sp
SRAM Dual Drive R-Mech 8sp
SRAM PG830 8sp Cassette
SRAM PC 830 8sp Chain
Total £46.96
Will most likely be single speed up front (42t)
Before buying i just want to check that the shifter and mech are going to work fine together as there's not a shifter to go with the dual drive. I'm guessing it will work ok. Also i pretty sure a 8 speed cassette goes fine on a 9sp hub correct ?

i'm not sure about the mech and shiftter but its worth considering that 8sp is quite hard to get hold of and its only gonna get worse. If i was you i would get a 9sp set up.
Oh and yes the cassette will fit0 -
True but a 9sp setup is going to jump the price up about another 20 quid and he is trying to keep it cheap as chips. I can't seeing him changing anything for a long time though as the bike he has now is like 18years old and it still has the same mech on it and the chain and cassette have only ever been change once.
Maybe i'll try and talk him round to spending the extra and getting a 9sp setup.0 -
Budget Shimano works better than budget sram IMHO, for shifters and mechs.0
