Hybrid bikes

I want a bike which is both fast and comfortable on rough roads and a little off road. Im using a mountain bike at the moment but Im wanting to go faster than it will enable me to.
Any ideas??

have you looked at fitting more of a slick tyre?

either slick tyres on a mtb or get a CX bike

Hybrids can be an option for some - CX bikes many find a bit uncomfortable and skittish handling.
