Morning All
Hope all are cool and groovy and enjoying the sunday sun 8)
I have three questions that I've been meaning to ask for a while now and finally managed to get my punk arse organised enough to do so so here goes:
1) I was going to have my 2005/6 Fox Float RL Pro pedal rear shock serviced which would cost around £80. Is it worth it or would I be better off getting a newer model such as the RP2? Merlin have them for £125 so is it worth the extra forty notes?
2) I also need to get a new headset and had been thinking of a lovely shiney Hope one or a Cane Creek S8. When I was loking on the Hope website I noticed that it says they're headset is made under liscence from Cane Creek so apart from the slinky machining is it the same bag of bones? My other thought had been the Syncros FL/AM Hardcore headset, any thoughts?
And finally...
3) I use Ergon GR2 grips with the little bar endy type things on them. Would these be ok to use on a Raceface Next carbon riser or would it put excess strain on the carbon & increase the risk of snapping? If so would the Next SL be a better choice?
Let me know what peoples think and help me avoid the wrath of evil Tim the enchanter....

shock service it.
headset Cane Creek own the patent on the Aheadset design and anyone that wants to make one needs to buy a license.
bars see the makers site and see if they are bar end compatible. Some carbon bars are some are not."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

A fountain of knowledge indeed you are Nick
Out of curiosity why would recommend servicing over a newer model & which of those headsets would you recommend for xc/trail riding on a Slayer 50?
A quick poke around the Raceface site informs me that the Next bars come supplied with BERP's (childish snigger of the day so far )or bar end reinforcment plugs. Ive emailed Raceface regarding the Ergon grips just to see what they say though I'd imagine it would be to use the BERP's.
Ive also emailed Merlin who I'd be getting the bars from to check if they come with said BERP's just to be on the safe side too.0 -
shocks i dont feel you would noice the difference.
headsets it is your money. i use Hope/fsa/cane creek/CK and non are service free.... none last for ever.
personally i would get the shock serviced and custom valved and get a Hope headset."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Well I shall bow to your better knowledge on these things as this rear shock is the only one I've had. Will also save £45 or there abouts which will come in handy elsewhere like Formula Oro K24's to replace my Hayes HFX 9's
I've previously used FSA Orbits on my 2 bikes which have been fine though as you say nothing lasts forever. What benefits would the custom valving have for the shock?0 -
if you are of average weight it will make no difference, but if you are using the settings (adjustments) close to one end of the range it will bring your "normal" settings into the middle of the adjustments so giving more usable range.
I do like the FSA Orbits been using the XL11 for years. keep the cups and drop in new bearings...."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Custom valving and making origami ghosts with the kids, its all getting a bit tricky lol I see where your coming from with the adjustment range, I'm 5'11 & about 12'8 st or 80 odd kgs if you'd rather. Would you think that the valving would be of benefit?0
