Those photos remind me why i left the army, having flash backs of running up sidbury hill.
  • Thats right out side my back door, I have had hours of fun playing around there. There is a nice downhill section from the top of Sidbury hill.

If your in the area again give me a shout.

Its worth making the extra trek to collingbourne woods for some good single track action.

    Hi Bossangel,

Where you based? I am always out on my bike, on a wednesday evening there are usually 4 / 5 of us out. If you fancy a ride let me know, the areas we normally cover include Andover, Amesbury, Durrington and Tidowrth.

    Hi Robin,

    Is that an open offer?

I have family in the area (Shipton Bellinger) and will be down there for a week in August...would be good to get out and about with someone who really knows where they are going! (unlike me who is in constant danger from tanks, guns, wild dogs etc. whenever I'm around there ! )

    Cheers

    Stu,

If you PM me a bit closer to the date, i will give Rob a bell and get something organised. He does know his way around the area very well. I've not seen him for a while, and it would be good to use this as an opportunity to catch up. Collingbourne woods is definitely worth a visit (It suffers badly in the wet though)

I live locally myself (Bulford), and the Boot Inn at Shipton Bellinger is one of my favourite local eateries, a bit pricey but very nice.

Mark - cheers, will do that. Had some cracking riding last time I was down....up the back of Tescos in Tidworth..when I'm there in Aug I'll be looking for a way to link all the good bits up.

I reckon anything on Salisbury Plain suffers when wet...the slippiness of the chalk and the clagginess of the clay are a recipe for disaster (for me anyway). What tyres do you run around there?

    Cheers again

Tbh, some of it drains really well, but you're right about the clay, it is unrideable in places. The first few ridesi did around here i had to stop every 50m or so to de-clag my wheels just so that they would pass through the frame (That's saying something on an Orange 5!!).

I almost always ride my ss 29er around these parts now, as there's not much technical riding, tyres are just Bontrager Jones. I avoid riding if it's too wet, it's just not worth it.

Bossangel, you don't drive a small flatbed with a Stumpy strapped to the back do you?

I could manage a Saturday afternoon. Not this weekend though as i'm off to Afan on Sunday and i don't have enough points in the bank to go riding 2 days on the trot. We could do with a dry spell before even considering Collingbourne woods too.

I'll get in touch with Rob and see what he suggests/thinks.

Hi there are some great trails and mega downhills pretty much all the way from Andover to Marlborough, trouble is most of the trails between the Savanake Forest and Collingbourne Woods are pretty small and connected by busy roads, i've been riding most of them "alone" for the last year and had no idea anyone else in the area was riding in these parts, I pass by both Collingbournes and Ludgershall everyday on my daily commute to London via Andover (on the train) usually in the rain and wind dodging lorries.
Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.
Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.

Well I'm only in the area once every few months, and the next visit is 9th-17th August. Planning to do this on Sat 9th, but any day during that following week should be OK with me. I'll keep an eye on the thread nearer the time! :)
  • Hi Itboffin
Just stumbled across your words re biking in the Hants/Wilts/W Berks area and thought I'd make contact as I'm always keen to know of more trails locally. I too have been riding in this area on my tod for the past couple of years since moving to Hungerford. Was out last night in fact - Combe Hill, Combe valley then Test Way and other trails, dropping down to Shalbourne and back. Drop me a line if you want and we can compare notes. Where in Wilts are you based anyway?
    Cheers
