Sorting Flat Tub when out on road

Just got some wheels with tubs on an old colnago i bought. Never fixed a tub before

If i get a puncture when out on the road, what is best?

Do you fit a new one to the rim to get you home, or do you use tub tape for a roadside repair to actually fix it to the rim.?

Do you put the tape on the rim and then apply the tyre?

Thanks

I used to remove one BEFORE it failed, carry as my spare and fit OTR in place of a blown one. Usually enough stick on the used one and the rim to keep in place while got home (taking it easy!). The time I blew two in one deep puddle (couldn't see what was on the bottom!), it was a long walk!

Worth putting some TUFO sealant in your tubs - if you puncture, the sealant is pretty effective at sealing the hole - you might need to top-up with a pump or CO2, but you don't need to change the tyre.Vittoria also do Pit Stop which a latex foam and inflator for flat tubs - but it does mean the tub is irrepairable thereafter. If you do have to replace a tub, there's usually enough residual stickiness from the tape or glue on the rim to hold the spare in place. Worth giving the spare a coating of glue to give it some tackiness.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

    Hi,
If they are stuck on using glue, then normally an old spare tub with some glue residue (as per meagain's post) will get you home.
If they're stuck on using tub tape, then in my experience it will come off with the old tub and leave a clean rim. Just slapping a tub on this won't work as it will rotate round the rim, so you'll need to apply some more tape - that's what I do anyway.
  • I remember about 40 years ago one of our lads had a puncture in his tub he cut open the casing pulled out the tube fixed it and knocked on a house to beg for some cotton and a needle then sewed it up again while we all waited with our clincher tires,Hmmm.
    Yea I'm getting on

Tuffo sealents, use those wheels for evening thrash or racing and buy another set of clincher wheels for day rides , Sorry but that's the way it is. People will wait while you change a tube but not while you repare a punctured tub.
