Chain & derailleur setup

Dear all,

I thought that I would have a go at replacing the rear freewheel sprocket assembly and derailleur on my bike. I have installed both items on my bike and managed to tune the derailleur so that the gears change smoothly and so that the small cogs are aligned well with the larger sprockets. The problem that I have is that when I ride my bike the gears feel very rough. I have had a look and it seems like the chain is getting 'stuck' ever so slightly on the sprockets at the rear. If I turn the pedals slowly I can see that instead of the chain coming away from the sprockets cleanly and smoothly it sort of 'pings' off. I have oiled everything well with 3 in 1 so I don't think that it is lack of lubrication. Could this be because my chain is not compatible with the sprockets that I bought Do you think that I need to buy a Shimano chain?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Regards,

Rob
