Hi everyone. I'm new to Mountain biking and am looking at getting a new bike. Are Carrera bikes any good? I've got my eye on a Carrera Fury in my local Halfords. It seems a decent spec for the price, but you never see mention of Carrera bikes in any of the magazines. Is this an omen?

My mate bought a fury last year around the same time that I bought my GT and he loves it, as you say well specced for the money and no problems with it after some hard riding.

far from it, carrera are a pretty good make of bike and as you have mentioned, come very well specced for the money. i particularly like the fury, i reckon it looks excellent for a start and think if the name on the downtube was different, every tom dick and harry would be reccomending it as one of the best bikes for anyone with 400 ish quid to spend.

as always, i would reccommend trying a test ride and see how it feels.

I bought a Kraken (model down from the Fury) a couple of years ago in the sale for £265 and despite looking around at other makes they were struggling to match the spec for the same sort of money.

Two years on its still going strong, despite regular off road use, although several bits have since been upgraded.

    I'd certainly recommend them.
  • The ISIS BB is a little fragile (mine was replaced under warranty) and the tektro hydro brakes take a bit of adjustment to get right IMO.
Otherwise the spec is spot on for the money; the frame and roxshox fork are very nice at this price.
You only need to worry about the name if you're the type of person who worries about names!.
  • I got a carrara myself a few months ago and am still having loads of fun with it. I think that it's good value and lends itself to upgrades, so you can have fun learning how it all works as well. if it's all new Downsides include the need to adjust the brakes regularly and the wheels are not special, but other than that would recommend regardless of the lack of 'name'.
    Keep it hard

If you get an MBUK back issue from somewhere, the Carrera is in one of their group tests, issue 208 (Feb '07) :) They're verdict was an 8 which is really good despite their bike being a pre-production model which they found the geometry not quite right

I recently purchased a 2007 Carrera Fury at a discounted price of £439 (due to the 2008 model bieng released) . Having done 4 trips to Cwmcarn this year I am really pleased with the bike, the fork is excellent for the money and everything else on the bike is more than up to the job. The frame is worthy of a few upgrades as bits break or wear out ,the wheelset is a little on the heavy side but overall the bike is a great XC machine for not much cash !! Dont worry about the name on the frame, you wont regret buying one.
