I am going to upgrade my rear brakes to disc brakes.

However, I'm strange and am used to left hand levers as front brakes and right hand levers as rear brakes.

I have a deore front and I know that there is a difference between left and right hand levers for shimano.

I heard that Formula, Avids and Hayes levers can be used as both left and right hand levers.

Am I right in saying only Shimano levers are not left and right hand compatible?

no you are wrong some brakes are flipable.

    some are not.

Hope are not, most Shimano are not. (I have seen some Hopes that are)

you can not generalize. details are needed.

You can always just swap the hoses over/cut them down. You cant 'flip' the lever straight over like some models of the other brands, as they have resovoirs.

They come with spare olives to accomodate this.

Things like the hayes sole can be flipped straight over but you dont want them cos theyre crap.
