When to bleed brake?

How do you know when it's time to bleed brakes?
I've had my Juicy 5s for just over a year. There is now more travel in the levers than when first bedded in although there is no apparent fade.
I assume the fluid absorbs moisture over time like automotive brakes and needs replacing.

    when the lever is spongy. have you adjusted the lever reach? there is an adjuster for this.
