Can anyone please tell me which KMC chain to use instead of a Shimano HG53. I have heard they are better quality; does anybody have any views?

Any other alternatives would be welcome.

Any of the 9-speed chains will be fine. They make chains of various levels of quality (from good to excellent) so you need to decide how much you are willing to spend. In my opinion, the hollow pin chains are a waste of money.

    Something like this:-

would be fine. The main point about buying a different make of chain at this level is that they will come with a special joining link, that can be removed without tools. These really are worth their weight in gold. I believe KMC actually make Shimano's chains anyway.

Hypocrisy is only a bad thing in other people.
  • I use the KMC SL gold chain really light seems strong and blingy or what you could wear it round you neck
    Yea I'm getting on
  • Second that got the kmc sl on both my mountain and road bike very bling bling :D

I'm pretty happy with KMC, although I did have one of their Powerlinks give way the other week part-way through a ride. The chain was only about 4 weeks old and had already done about 500 miles. The titanium nitrided gold chains are noticeably smoother and I reckon are ideal for best-bike duty, but probably not everyday use due to cost.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • Thanks everyone. I will definitley go for a KMC now and I think I will check out the Sl and the Titanium nitride ones jsut in case funds will allow. Cheers.
  • i've always been tempted by the titanium nitrided gold chain but was worried about looking a bit of a (ok more of a) ponce but since such respectable members of the forum use them then i feel i am obliged to follow suit

if you shop around you can pick up the kmc sl chains at a reasonable price. you can get even better deals if you buy in packs on 2 or 3.

I see they include a 'missing' link which presumably has now been found :)
