I am going to be doing the coast to coast later this year on my mountain bike, i have heard it is a mixture of road and off road (cycle paths and old train lines). Can anybody suggest a good tyre that gives benefits on both? I have seen the specialized crossroads armadillo, is this what I should be looking for? Any experience?

Those tyres should work fine.
I've got Fastrak Pros (Specalized) on three of four of our MTBs and rate them for both road and trail.0 -
halo twin rails
gives a narrow, almost racing bike width contact when on the road or hard smooth trail
on soft ground it'll sink in a little and grip with the rest of the tyreMy signature was stolen by a moose

Another vote for Halo twin rails. I'm actually using them now in the wet and they are still even ok if you're on a hard pack trail with the psi lowered and they're great for tarmac when pumped up hard. I took racing ralphs off because they dragged on tarmac and were wearing too quickly.0
