I'm possibly looking for some 4-5" (100-130mm) forks for under £50. new or 2nd hand I don't really mind. generally they'll only be for road use, with v brakes for sure but IS disc mounts if available. yes road sus sounds silly but both I and my dad will be using the bike for getting to the pub (me) and commuting (him) and he's getting on and would prefer a bit of softness up front.
so yes. is there anything outstandingly bad about rockshox dart 1 forks - 2007 vintage?
£45 from CRC which is pretty tempting. they're not the lightest but its a steel frame anyway.
I'd get some tora's but even at ~£90 price they're double the darts.

Anyone got any thoughts or ideas?

They're not bad, no adjustabel damping, but you can wind the pre-load up to make them stiffer if you want.

I've got a nearly new set of Dart 2's in me shed

  • they are decent if basic forks however much better than jonny no namers you would get for a similar price. for what you are describing they will probably be spot on. No good spending loads of cash if not needed.
  • the replies are what i want to hear so thanks for that

Not really other than propping up the box they're in.

The steerer tube is cut to fit my GT aggressor so I'll have to measure it.

Ooops, not got V-Brake mounts

Dart 1 has no damping at all - the Dart2 is much better! I would avoid it, is a pogo stick. The Tora is VASTLY better.

Oh I'm selling a Manitou Black for 45 quid - 100mm of travel with fluid flow damping.
  • ha ha no worries steve.
let me check this months budget ;) i'm already getting new wheels from merlins!
the bikes an on-one inbred 456 which is 4-6" travel adjusted and i'm using 5" at the moment so 4" should still be very usable on the road. I might pm you super soon...
