Avid Juicy Brakes - advice needed please

Hi all,
I'm a need of a bit of braking advice please - I've very new to the MTB scene (sorry - have been a roadie for years!!) and rode my first MTB event last summer (the Bristol 12 hour) the day after I built my first ever MTB!!! In general the bike that I built for myself it OK - but it's got cable pull disks which I've been told are pants and should be changed!!
Looking around the net I've come across the Avid hydraulic range - and in particular the new Juicy 3's which seem like a great price for a complete set up (£120). Are these any good?? Or is it worth spending more and going for something like the Juicy 5's (£200 for front and rear)??
Any advice to a newbie who's enjoying finding a new side to the sport would be greatly appreciated.

the 3 is not really in the same family as the other Juicys and should not be available aftermarket as it should be OE only.
the 5 is a better brake but the Formula Oros are considerably better. Have a look for the K18's.
one other thing to consider is the lever and gear controls. they are seperate and not combined as one unit?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

As Nick said the Juicy 3's really aren't in the same league as the rest - if you want Avid I would go for the fives or sevens (which have a pad adjust dial which is handy)
The Formulas are getting rave reviews at the moment but I can't comment on them as I have never ran them - Nick certainly is an avid fan (pardon the awful pun)0 -

used to be an Avid fan but now just stick to the Formula!"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Having said all that, the Juicy 3s on our Rockhopper are performing MUCH better than the Juicy 5s on my Stumpy.
While the 3s bedded in immediately, the 5s are still very squeaky and are driving me slightly insane. About the same power too.
So ignore the marketing hype for once and try them out before judging!0 -
Merlin are doing sets of Formula k18s are Hayes Stroker Ryde brakes for £130/set. The Stroker is a new brake but is meant to be very good."Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0
