I have bought one of the Charlie the bikemonger ss conversion kits. I have stripped all my gears etc off. Right problem! The chain keeps moving to the edge of the chain tensioner when any sort of tension is put on it?? It's driving me mad can anyone help??

It sounds like your chainline might be at fault - ie the line the chain takes from chainwheel on it's way to the rear cog. Could you perhaps move the cog inward/outward slightly by rearranging the spacers (which should have come with the kit from Charlie) so that the cog is more in line with the chain as it leaves the chainring? The plastic roller on the tensioner should have some sideways movement each way to cater for not too perfect chainlines, however if your chain line is way off the mark then that is perhaps why the chain is riding up on the edge.

  • Think you have hit les nail on the head there :D Will have another fiddle and see.
  • Wooot!! It was due to me having the bloody chain to long  I have been out and tested my now gearless Kona and it's great!!!

Surprising how much slack 1 link on the chain produces when running SS, picking a 1/2 link up on saturday and hopefully that will reduce the slack to a tensioner free drivetrain.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • I think I will need a 1/2 link too. I am amazed at how many bloody stiff links I have too :(

Quick cure for stiff links is two pairs of pliers, grab chain either side of stiff link and twist opposing ways so that your hands are 2" apart.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • Cheers for that :)
