Does temperature affect the Shimano Nexus 8?

For 2 days on the trot, when I started my commute ride, early in the morning, I could not change gear, I seemed to be stuck in about 3rd, and couldn't get out of it. When I tried the bike later in the day it worked perfectly, the following day it self rectified after about 500 yards? The 1st day the temperature was -4, the second -2 degrees celsius, would that be the reason?

  • Yes, cables can freeze in sub-zero temperatures. This is particularly common if you ride home in the rain and then store the bike in a shed overnight when the temperature dips below freezing.

Try not to store your bike in a position that allows water to run inside cable housing, and make sure you have good-quality cables and housing. Also make sure your derailleur is in good working order--sounds like the return spring is not up to the task of moving a stiff cable. I'm not a big believer in lubing cables as I find that lube tends to attract grit and gunks up in the cold.
  • The nexus 8 is a hub gear, no derailleur - but yes, shifting can be compromised by freezing of the shifter cable inside the housing, or by snow/slush collecting on the exposed part of the shifting mechanism on the hub and then freezing, if you commute through snow/slush etc. Sometimes you can clear it by kicking it off or working the cable if theres no obvious jam, sometimes you just need to wait for it to melt... (thats been my experience anyway)

i had a problem with a bit of water in my hub freezing and jamming the freewheel

it could freewheel when i stopped pedaling, but if i tried to pedal backwards, not a chance.

warmed it up, flushed it through with oil and it was fine

Might also be the grease. Its basically wax, right? And it also has quite a bit of water in it. I rode my summer bike on a rare crisp and clear day, again well below zero. The freewheel wouldn't work and the headset appeared to be fused.

So I put the whole bike in the microwave for 2 minutes, and it was fine! (I made that up)
  • Don't mention the Nexus hub gear!

Nightmare memories of the Globe IG8 we had for four months and sent back with a full refund!
