Hey, Looking at buying my first £500 bike in about 8 years, used to have a Marin previously.

THe bikes I have narrowed it down to are Kona Caldera 2007 / GT Avalanche 1 Disc / or the Focus Fatboy 2008.

The type of riding i will be doing is mainly XC , Rutland Resovoir , plus trail centres on weekends away.

What bike would any one suggest for sub £500? Also as the focus is only avaialble from Wiggle - is there a way to "test ride"

cheers !!

nope no way of testing, you can buy try and send back..but then I think you still have to buy somethign else..plus all the hassle. Focus bikes always get good write ups and the Fatboys been recommended by a number of people, though the fork is a weak point (if you do go focus, maybe look at the northern lite which is only slightly more expensive)...just a pity you can't test.

The GTs a good bike and the Caldera I'd only say if you can get it as a bargin the sales. Cube is another well specc'd euro brand might be worth a look.
