How to measure steerer length?

Hi,

Currently have a Giant Terrago Large (2004 I think) and the forks need upgrading.

I'm looking at buying a set of 2nd hand ones and wondered how I measure the steerer tube length, I take it this is the only variable when buying forks? Can i do it externally from the bike or do i need to take the forks apart from the frame?

with a tape measure. and measure the fork crown to the top cap and that is your current length plus about 5mm.

Sounds like I asked a really obvious question now! :oops:

215mm actual size.. Does that sound about right?
