Converting a 24 speed to an 8 speed

My mate has a old Kona steel hardtail which is currently 24 speed. He wants to convert it into an 8 speed by taking off the granny ring and the large ring on the front.
How do we go about doing this. Is it as easy as getting rid off the front deraileur and the two rings he doesn't want and just fitting it all back on the frame or do we need to get some spacers. I presume we do not need a Chain tensioner as we will still have the rear derailleur.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

What chainset it is?0

you'll need narrower chainring bolts. You also might need a chain device to stop the chain derrailing, but i've been okay with mine.0

Use the chainring bolts from the granny ring.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

remove the granny ring (if possible, some cheap ones are rivetted to middle ring), swap big ring for a bash ring, ditch front mech/cable/shifters?0
