Can I swap rings to make a compact?

Have a centaur 53/42 with the carbon cranks, and want a compact for hilly rides.

Can I simply buy 2 chainrings and use the existing set up, changing the rings over, or am I going to need to buy a new Compact?

Campag is 135BCD, so the smallest combination I think you'll be able to get is 50/38.

It'd probably just be easier to swap to a compact.

With 135 BCD you can't go below a '39' ring.

Hypocrisy is only a bad thing in other people.
  • garybee is right, and being able to go to a 38 with shimano standard BCD is a distinct advantage if like me you can ride almost but not quite everything on a double.

have you considered changing the cassette to generate lower gearing ?
