Ultegra chain and cassette wear?

How often do these need changed? I've done between 2500 - 3000 miles on my 10sp Ultegra and my LBS tells me that they sometimes need changed every 1000 miles or so. With my mileage that would be every couple of months!!!

If you have 3 chains on the go, ie swap over them every few hundred miles the cassette should last a lot longer.

On a tour I did around 1500miles and the chain started to show serious signs of wear (pins started to fall out). Probably didnt help that I did not have much change to clean it.

Replaced with a KMC which I find lasts better. Not had a problem with cassettes that I am aware of.

Buy a chain gauge (under £10) - check every few weeks / before cleaning chain - get a new chain when the current on reaches between 0.75 and 1.0 wear levels. If you do that your cassette will last a very long time (for me currently just over 10000km and still OK) before you get chain skips. My chains last 2000-3000k - hilly winter rides in mud and grit really shorten their life

I agree on the whole although I change the chain a little earlier than this and keep them. Once I've done 3 chains like this I start again at the beginning with the "worn" chains, finally I'll have to change cassette and chain and start all over again!!!

Alternatively some regular bike maintenance could do the trick. Just be sure to spend 5 or 10 mins after each gritty ride to clean things up. I've done around 6k miles and still very few signs of wear.
