My bro is after getting a bike but doesn't want to spend over £300, he wants something that at least has a strong frame that if needed can have upgrades at a later date i.e. forks, brakes.. the bike will be used off road and on, so it needs to be strong enough over bumps, stumps, small drops/jumps etc... (nothing really hardcore or aggressive) I have come up with these 5 which i know two are in the what bike thread but i would like some opinions on the other 3 as well please. I'm not too sure on the brakes of these bikes if there any good or the forks. Also is it worth him getting the disc version over the v versions.
Carrera Vulcan Disc Spec £279.99
Carrera Vulcan V Spec £229.99
Specialized Hardrock Sport 2008 £299.99
Scott Aspect 50 2008 £269.99
GT Avalanche 3.0 2008 £269.99 or Disc Spec £299.99
Just in case because i'm sure someone will but please doesn't suggest "if you speed an extra £**" as he won't be interested. He's already complaining i'm trying to get him to spend car money.
The bikes i have chosen are from evans and halfords as these are the onlt two place's i can really get to so he can stand over them to check clearance, feel for the bike and have a good look at them.
Thanks

Might do to take a look outside those two shops. The Saracen Vortex LE is a bargain. Hydraulic discs, aluminium frame, decent wheelset for the price, deore rear mech and truvativ cranks. Cant get any better than that for 300 in my opinion.

Have a read of the what bike thread, many of the options commented on in there, plus others.
Vortex is well specced, but no means of testing it - essential for a newbie.
Evans have the Mongoose Tyax Super for just 330 (yes, over budget!). Absolutely superb bike.0 -
Problem with the Tyax Super is being a 07 model the evans stores i can get to may not have any, the 08 model is 400 quid.
I can add the Mongoose Tyax Elite 2008 £299.99 to the list, someone commented on it in the what bike thread saying it's a good bike for the cash0 -
Damn, I'd thought I'd posted the link to the Super! They definitely have them in stock, and should be able to ship to your store. Elite also very good

Always worth enquiring about when you are in Evans. May have one ready to try! The Elite is the same geometry.0
