Does anybody know of a reasonably direct cycle route from West London to Oxford?

Tried the Michelin website ? It has a bike option to it's route finder

Unless you love traffic and hate hills then I'd steer clear of going through High Wycombe on the A40.
The route I normally use to to head out to Uxbridge, then
2. Farnham Common to Wooburn
3. Then onto Marlow where I hit the hills
4. through Fingest and Turville (a lovely climb up Holloway Lane)
5. on towards Christmas Common for a huge freewheel into Watlington
6. then through Chalgrove into Oxford.0 -
National Cycle route 5 onto 4? Slow but safe. Might not be what you're after but worth a mention.0

I'd had a look Routes 4 & 5, but I think I'll give Gavin's route a fling.
Excellent, thanks all.0 -
If my memory serves me correct, Gavins route is almost identical to the route used on the London > Oxford charity ride that takes place in June. The area around Fingest & Turville (where the Vicar of Dibley was filmed) is very quiet with a couple of excellent pubs, enjoy.

Here's a map, almost the same as Gavins' route:
