Headset and Bottom Bracket

I have an '07 Rockhopper and I found out from my LBS that in the next few months it will be necessary to fit a replacement headset and bottom bracket. The headset is graunching and sticking when left for a few days, and the bottom bracket is squeaking (sign of worse to come - apparently).
Anyway, it seems that upgrading is the common thing to do, with longer lasting, harder wearing, 'blingier' gear.
Any ideas? The bike was under £700 new so I don't think Chris King is quite on the cards, or an entire new XTR groupset. But some upgrade ideas nonetheless would be good.
I ride XC, trails etc., no jumps or commuting.
Cheers.

LX or XT chainsets are probably a good bet, perhaps a nice cane creek cartridge headset as well.
what cranks do you have atm and what headset?Giant TCR advanced 2 (Summer/race)
Merlin single malt fixie (Commuter/winter/training)
Trek superfly 7 (Summer XC)
Giant Yukon singlespeed conversion (winter MTB/Ice/snow)

At the moment I have the stock factory fitted gear. Shimano octalink bottom bracket with standard deore chainset. Headset might be a basic cane creek but i'd have to check. Nothing special anyway!
Just heard from the LBS. They've fitted a replacement BB, identical shimano component, as upgrading means doing the chainset as well.
So for the time being a new headset is the only thing on the list.
Chris King, Hope, FSA, Cane Creek, or something else more exoctic?Specialized Rockhopper '07

Just keep running them until they die - the BB may go on for another year!0
