Hi on my way to work this morning the strangest thing happened, i was pedalling away and all of a sudden the cassette just stopped driving the bike along. The cassette just went into a sort of freewheeling mode. I remember on the old fashioned freewheels that in the body there were three or more pawls which engaged the freewheel to drive the bike along. I have looked at the shimano website and find that on the exploded view of the wheel that the body of the cassette is held in place by a hollow threaded bolt, part 16 and also part 17 and 18 but i cannot get part 16 off am i wasting my time trying to fix this problem? has anyone else had this problem? Money is not a problem so a new set of wheels is not an issue. If anyone can help then there expertise would be very welcome. Thanks one very puzzled Ademort

new freebody needed. not worth stripping and fixing.

the old one is removed by a 10mm allen key and a lot of force.

  • Sounds like there is water in the freehub which has rusted the pawls and stopped them engaging. Easy job to replace the whole freehub (remove axle and bearings and then use 10mm allen key) but not sure about cost or parts availability for the R500 (which I assume is a factory built set?). Alternatively, you could try taking the freehub off, levering out the rubber seal at the back, putting some oil in and leaving it for a couple of hours (replacing the seal of course!). That might just sort it but no guarantees.

Thanks Nick have just ordered a new set of wheels. Just one thing , do you know why this happens, is it a defect or just wear. Cheers Ademort

See my previous post. It's water getting into the body. Just remove from time to time, lever off the back seal, put some light oil in and replace the seal.

Freehub costs around £20 or so : my 105 rear hub (a few years old now) needs that replaced and LBS quoted this price.
