Jumping chain on new bike

i've recently bought a brand new Marin Eldridge Grade with 9 speed drivetrain. I am experiencing pretty bad 'jumping' on the rear cassette in the middle gears, by jumping i mean that when on shifting down under load the chain just spins, as do the cranks until the chain bites. I am very proficient at setting up gears, have done with 8 speeds for ages without a problem. I would expect this to happen to a worn drivetrain, but on a new ride? My new bikes in the past never did this, is this a problem with new 9 speed systems? Do they need to bed in? HELP PLEASE!!!! thanks

could be a stiff link but i would take it back to the shop for sorting.

  • that sounds strange.

    how long is recent?
roughly how many miles have you done?
    has it always done it?
  • like last week. i've done 2 rides, the first was only 6 miles and it was awful the second was 17 miles and it wasn't so bad although still slipping.
  • I'd get it back to the shop for them to sort it out. It's a brand new bike, so it should be their problem to fix!
