Compact chainset - Deraileur

Recently had the Tiagra 4550 50/34 Compact chainset fitted - generally pleased - however - when on the small 34 ring with the two smallest sprockets (on 8 speed cassette) the rear deraileur's pretty much horizontal being stretched back towards the end of the rear wheel - as a result I'm tentative about using those two smallest sprockets on the small chainring (not that I would very often) - is this normal? - has anyone else noticed a similar thing with their Compact chainset? Is it putting any silly stresses on the chain or the rear deraileur being stretched back like that? Am starting to think that 9 or 10 speed would be a better combo with a Compact (for the future).

Thanks

Take a link out of the chain if the large/large combo gives enough slack.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
