    yes.

but it does depend on the forks.

    why? cost.

i have not faced my RS forks, but if you have access to the tools then it is a good thing to have done.

but with cartridge bearings i would say that it is not quite as important as with lose bearings.

    Hi Nick,

I'm just wondering about exceptions to the rule - I'm intrigued by your comment that it depends on the fork. Care to expand?

Also, I installed Shimano XT calipers onto unfaced Fox Vans (IS mount) - the usual Shimano post mount caliper that fits to IS via a rotor-size-specific adapter. There seems to be enough room for adjustment in the Shimano system to get the calipers set up nicely without an exact/faced mounting surface, so is there ever a need to get forks faced with similar post-plus-adapter calipers?

some of the higher end forks are made to a higher standard and are already faced. Take a disc mount on a white bros fork. is is machined from the same piece of metal as the axle carrier not cast.

and facing the caliper mounts has nothing to do with clearance but with having the mounts at 90 degrees to the axle. if the mounts are not at 90 degrees the pads will never be parallel to the disc and will rub. (unless there is something like Avids adjuster setup).
