  • very good if you are a smooth enough rider, but expensive. For the money you could get some tora's easily. Which would be good, or Reba SL from merlin for £220, top choice.

    Rigid forks are fun.

You will get battered to bits if you go down hill at any speed but on singletrack they are a real blast they make you think about your line and force you to be a smooth rider and you end up a better and faster rider when you go back to sus forks

I personally can only ride for a couple of hours with my rigids fitted whereas I can go out all day with my rockshox rebas but some days I prefer marmite to vanilla

I ride carbon forks/bars/seat post on my xc bike, I really like them (& how they work together) but you have to ride a bit differently compared to a sus fork, for fast stuff be smooth pick your lines & flow using your arms & legs for suspension, un-weight the bike, shift your weight more & you can still be quick.
Slow technical stuff again needs more weight distribution & spotting the best line, but you can easily lift the front over small stuff with a flick of your wrists & not lose out much to your sus riding friends as well as it giving you an advantage up hills.
It depends as well on the sort of xc you ride, if it's constant fast downs over drops & lots of rocks/roots at speed they do get a bit much but for shorter downhill spurts they are fine.

My carbon forks are the Bontrager Race X-Lite ones that have a thin alu core wrapped with carbon, they flex a bit backwards towards the drop outs which takes the sting out of smaller hits.
I say try some & see how you get on as they seem to have a decent re-sale value if you don't get on with them, I bought mine 2nd hand as new for £80 & they have been on ever since (at the expense of my Fox RLT80s).
