would this be a wise buy for a beginner

hi i really wanna giving mountain biking a go,i live in carlisle,so plenty of choice for off roading,i have a budget of around 300 quid,and would like to buy now as i feel this is best time of year to get a good buy,i went to my local bike shop and they were showing me a giant yukon,does anybody have one of these?or would i be better to save a little more moeny and buy something with hydrualic brakes? cheers guys
