I'm sure you're not going to have any issues with finding a trail budy on here
Bike wise, you'd be best buying a Hard tail, ie a bike that only has front suspension, there are laods of good ones in your budget, there's a "What bike thread in the buying advice section that will be proper helpful.0 -
At that price, I'd look at a hardtail, ie front suspension only, something like this would be good: http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/?fn=product&productId=560&categoryId=100 However, if you're new to the sport it may be best sticking to a £500 bike as they are very good nowadays. Have a look at the GT Avalanche 1.0 and the Carrera Fury from Halfords.
Sorry, I can't help on routes as I'm not from round there.0 -

The focus bikes on wiggle are very good value:

But if this is your first 'proper' MTB I'd suggest going to your local bike shop and trying a couple. Merlin bikes are fantastic and imo they are one of the best bike shops in the country, so if you're tempted by their bikes and are willing to drive to Lancs to maybe try a couple then go for it!0 -
Hi there! Welcome to the forum
Whereabouts in West Yorkshire are you? I'm in Leeds and getting back into MTBing again. I currently have a couple of problems with my bike, but will hopefully get them sorted soon.
I'm considering joining the Bad Brains MTB Club once i've got a bit fitter and more use to riding again. They're based in Wakefield and go on loads of trailsIt takes as much courage to have tried and failed as it does to have tried and succeeded.
Join us on UK-MTB we won't bite, but bring cake!

Some good chocies of bikes, but I'd but from a local shop, and not the net if you are a beginner. Give you chance to test a few out and easy back up.0
