The Austrian federal police is now investigating after an anonymous tip-off regarding Humanplasma, a Viennese blood bank which also operates in Germany. Apparently there is a list containing about 30 athletes, of which the cream of Germany's biathletes (Olympic medalists and all) and half of the Rabobank team. So this story is set to continue. List in the link below.

The list was published during the biathlon world championships in Sweden.... all of this seems like a deja vu of what went on in cycling (doping news during the TdF etc). The German skiing federation already forced a journalist to stop publishing the story in January and they have started more legal proceedings.

Didn't we do this last month? I only read the afp link, but it seems to be a rehash of what came out last month. What's new?

This is the most important weekend of the Biathlon world championships - the relay and mass-start races - so it's possible it is an attempt to destabalize the German team on the eve of these races, or it's a fishing line cast out by a newspaper to see what bites. The tabloid "Österreich" which published the list is notorious for articles giving false information. Personally I reckon it's more likely some of the Russians are doping.
  • As far as I understand, the new element ist that the Austrian police are investigating. In Jan, this was only a report by a journalist who was subsequently gagged by the skiing federation.

Fuentes was just one "doctor", there are presumably others involved. Whether this Austrian "clinic" has been up to no good, we'll see. But it's entirely possible, and about time, that others get rumbled for their shady practices.
  • In your haste to dis skiing please note someof teh other names such as menchow, boogerd etc as shown on Swedish TV last night. And who was teh swedish skier who caught a cold during the week, had to leave the teams hotel 'but will be back in time to compete this weekend. groan-. when will the swedish media own up to teh fact that their guys and galls are doing it too!

If you read the OP you'll notice that he mentioned half of the Rabobank team....

cyclingnews.com is quoting two Rabo riders: "The last time I was in Austria was for a training camp," Posthuma said, according to the Dutch news site AD.nl. "That applies to me, too," said Weening, who is currently in Italy doing light training after a knee injury. So they have visited Austria.

Presumably the quiet roads, fresh mountain air and so on make Austria a good place for a training camp but at the same time, Switzerland, Italy and France are a lot closer and they can check out the Tour and Giro routes etc.

So this story could run a bit more...
  • I think the translation of the quote is somewhat incorrect.

I have looked at the AD website and what Posthuma actually is that the last time he was in Austria was during the Tour of Austria when he was with the junior team. ("De laatste keer dat ik in Oostenrijk was, was tijdens de Ronde van Oostenrijk bij de opleidingsploeg.").

So seems like he claims not to have been there for a while.
